Consulate spokeswoman Micaela Schweitzer-Bluhm said Thursday's visit by Democrats Brian Baird of Washington and Keith Ellison of Minnesota is the first of its kind to Gaza in at least four years.

She said Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts is also expected to arrive in Gaza later Thursday for a meeting with officials from international organizations there. The lawmakers are expected to meet with UN officials, and there are no plans to talk to Hamas officials.

The US considers Hamas a terror organization.

Since taking office last month, President Barack Obama has repeatedly said he hopes to improve US relations with the Muslim world. As the first Muslim member of Congress, Ellison could play a key role in that mission. He could not immediately be reached for comment.

Hamas official Ahmed Yousef welcomed the arrival of the Americans. "We highly appreciate the visit of any delegation that wants to find out the facts and see what has happened on the ground in Gaza," he said.

Several UN facilities, including a large warehouse at the organization's Gaza headquarters, were heavily damaged. The UN has been trying to raise emergency funds to meet what it says are dire humanitarian needs in Gaza following the offensive.

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said he had no knowledge of the lawmakers' Gaza visit.

Meanwhile Thursday, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton confirmed that she would be attending an international summit set to take place in Egypt next month where money will be raised to rebuild the Gaza Strip.

"One thing is that immediately upon being inaugurated and my taking office as secretary of state, President Obama and I said the United States will get re-engaged in trying to help in the Middle East," said Clinton, who is visiting Indonesia.
