Knifeman’s Prey Tells of Attack

A young mum has been left scarred for life and terrified of going out after being slashed by a suspected illegal immigrant she befriended. Karen - not her real name - has spoken to the Herald after suffering horrific injuries on Monday morning at the hands of a man she knew as Ahmed.

Police have now extended the hunt for him nationwide.

Karen, who has learning difficulties, is understandably terrified that Ahmed will come back and carry out an even more violent attack.

The 18-year-old admits that she had got to know Ahmed only in recent weeks, to chat and to say ‘Hello’ to, but had been warned off speaking to him by her partner.

At the time of the savage attack on Monday morning she was with her one-year-old daughter, in a pushchair, and a female friend outside the Unite student accommodation building at the junction of Royal Parade and Armada Way.

She had just visited the Jobcentre and was about to head for Midland House to speak to her social worker when Ahmed approached her.

Recounting the story in a quiet and nervous voice, she explained: “He was behind me.

“My friend asked who he was and I said ‘Oh, that’s my friend there.’ I just turned around and spoke to him.

“He asked where I was going, and I said, ‘Shopping’.

“He then said I was ignoring him and called me a [censored].

“I asked him not to call me that name,” she said.

“He pulled my hair back and I thought he was hitting me in the face and neck.

“I didn’t know it was a knife.”

Ahmed, whom police believe is of Moroccan origin, then raced off towards the Sundial in the city centre.

Karen said: “My friend looked at me and said, ‘You’ve been stabbed’. I put my hand up and felt my face and I could feel the blood.”

After being given first aid treatment by a BT worker she was raced to Derriford Hospital for treatment to three long wounds.

She received nearly 20 stitches to a four-inch cut to her face, more than a dozen more to her four-inch neck wound and seven stitches to a two-inch cut on her left arm.

Karen said: “I told them to stop stitching me up because it was hurting.

“I’ve got to go back to hospital again soon; I don’t know if there will be any lasting scars.

“My doctor said it was the worst thing he’s ever seen.

“People have said the cut to my neck could have killed me.

“I think God saved me.

“My friend said that when Ahmed finished cutting me he looked at me and then her with a look as if to say, ‘What have I done?’

“I’m really scared of going out now. I went out the next day for a few minutes and had a really bad panic attack.”

Karen explained how Ahmed used to boast of being an illegal immigrant who had previously lived in Derby, Swansea and Bristol before moving to Plymouth.

She said: “He said he had gone to see someone in Derby and bought a passport. He used to live in different places.

“He was always asking me to come and meet him or asking to come and stay with me. He lived anywhere he could.

“I didn’t ever think he would ever do something like this - but then, everyone can sound nice and then do this.”
