NEW DELHI: Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Monday instructed party units in southern states to collect relief material for Tamil civilians trapped in the Sri Lanka-LTTE conflict, in a move aimed to allay resentment in Tamil Nadu against the Centre's `hands off' policy. (Chaimfan's translation: She is doing this to appease the peace-loving Muzzies in her midst like the good little dhimmi that she has always been.)
The party chief also instructed her colleagues to work out with foreign ministry the modalities of reaching relief supplies to the affected population.
The move coincides with increasing signs suggesting that the plight of Tamil civilians may have started touching a populist chord in Tamil Nadu. While the state initially appeared lukewarm to LTTE's rout at the hands of Sri Lanka's army, a persistent campaign involving politicians like MDMK chief Vaiko and joined by lawyers leading to violence at Madras High Court seems to have brought about not just sympathy for the Tamils in Lanka but also resentment against the neutrality observed by the Centre.
Tamil Nadu chief minister and DMK boss M Karunanidhi has also drawn criticism.
While Tamil Nadu is an important battleground for the Lok Sabha elections, there are limits to what the Centre can do with regard to the fighting in the island nation. Besides the fact that the LTTE is a proscribed organisation whose chief is an accused in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, India cannot afford to lean on the Mahinda Rajapakse government in Colombo to make any concession that it is not ready to make itself in J&K.

Sending relief material seems to be the party's way of making a gesture to Tamil sentiments, without resiling from its stand against terrorism and redrawing of boundaries of sovereign nations.
The Congress Party is India's Bolshevik equivalent of Kadima or Labor in Israel. I suspect that if Ms. Gandhi got a couple limbs blown off by a Tamil shahid in a crowded building, she'd think twice about fundraising for jihad. And then again, she might not. Self-hating animals rarely change.
