I do not understand that how Tamils unnecessarily become so important here. LTTE is albeit absolutely undesired, but that should not reflect on all the Tamils as a whole.

Tamils are basically not against the Sanskritic/Brahmanic leadership of India and they are only so called pro-Dravidian in the same way as the North Indians are misunderstood as so-called Aryans.

This rift if any was attempted by British rulers under their policy of divide and rule. The EuroCommunists among British Empire propagated the so-called Aryan Invasion Theory and encouraged so-called anti-caste reform movements in Madras and when it succeeded to some extent then it was attempted to pitch it against the Sanskritic/Brahmanic leadership of India for gaining sectarian popular support. It was to fail utterly as the Tamilnadu which was supposed to be one of the most educated and learned regions of India started receding  in all modern fields. Tamils soon understood this conspiracy and they effectively marginalized the sectarian leaders.

Tamils are an integral part of the Hindu religion like everywhere else. Some of them earlier attempted for atheist movements with all pomp and shows but they remained only on papers and then fizzled out. I have earlier read a lot about it, but when I visited Tamilnadu for first time 30 years back, I was surprised to see the largest possible numbers of Hindu temples there which were old as well as new and they are ever growing in numbers.
