Croats like to claim he was theirs or at least that he's a "Yugoslav". I guess because he was born in Croatia that makes him a Croat.

One of the most important but overlooked scientists and inventors to ever live. Overshadowed by Thomas Edison, who he worked for and helped to create the lightbulb. Tesla's lightbulb was rejected in favor of Edison's who was dubbed as the father of electricity and inventor of the lightbulb we use today.

Interestingly enough, I believe that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled a very long time ago that Tesla's radio patent was legitimitate and recognized him as the inventor of the radio. Still, this man's contribution to science and electricity is largely neglected by the Western world.

Tesla was a very bright inventor however he was a very poor businessman. Tesla died almost broke. He lived out his final years as a hotel resident using some patent drawings and prototypes of yet to be developed inventions as collateral against his rent. Here was a man that made Westinghouse one of the leading companies in the country. Westinghouse was able to beat down Edison's grip on the power supply business because of Tesla's  work with AC power systems. Tesla was also giving Marconi a run for the money with many of his inventions. What saved Marconi was the fact that he was a sharp businessman and had the money to discredit Tesla. A great part of Tesla's personal fortune was used up in a never ending string of patent infringement law suits he would bring against his competitors. In the end Tesla's headstrong way of dealing with things made his backers shy away from backing his projects. He would often take money earmarked towards one invention and use the money for everything but what it was intended for. He then would go back and ask for more funding. This was something that wrangled JP Morgan to no end. In the end this was what caused Morgan and then Westinghouse to turn their backs on him. All and all he was a very great inventor and should get far more recognition then he  actually does.
