SHABBAT MORNING SERVICE with special guest Naim Ateek

Founder/Director, Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center, Jerusalem

Potluck Oneg Shabbat meal follows

Canon Naim Ateek is an Episcopalian priest. He was born in the Palestinian village of Beisan, south of the Sea of Galilee, and grew up in Nazareth. Ateek established the Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center in Jerusalem in 1991. Before that, he served as Canon of St. George’s Cathedral in Jerusalem and as a parish priest in Haifa and Nazareth. He is author and editor of numerous books, including Justice and Only Justice: A Palestinian Theology of Liberation; Faith and the Intifada; Jerusalem: What Makes for Peace; Our Story: The Palestinians; Holy Land, Hollow Jubilee: G-d, Justice and the Palestinians; and A Palestinian Christian Cry for Reconciliation.

This service will be the first time that Ateek has been a guest at an American Jewish congregation, and reflects Kadima’s commitment to building bridges for understanding and dialogue, whether in agreement or disagreement.

EREV TISHA B’AV

Kadima House (see address/directions below)

Tisha b’Av commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples. Since it often falls near the anniversaries of the only use of nuclear weapons in Japan, progressive communities often combine the two themes. Tisha b’Av is a fast day with a somber and reflective mood. Last year, Kadima held a moving observance that won many kudos.
