Free Papua Movement denies killing Australian
THE local commander of the Free Papua Movement has denied his forces were behind the shooting death of the Australian Drew Grant near the Freeport gold and copper mine in the restive Indonesian province of Papua.
As Mr Grant's body was repatriated home to Melbourne yesterday, the death toll from two shooting attacks over the weekend rose to three yesterday after Indonesian authorities revealed they found the body of a police officer, Marsom Patipulohi, in nearby jungle.
The officer was driving one of the vehicles that was attacked on Sunday - the day after Mr Grant was killed - and fled into the wilderness. Reports varied as to whether he died from a fall, was stabbed or kidnapped and shot. A Freeport security guard also died in Sunday's attack.
Abdul Munim Idris, the doctor who conducted the autopsy on Mr Grant's body, said that fragments of bullets were found in the body, but no whole bullets.
He told the Herald that the bullets could have fragmented on impact or be lodged in the backbone but the autopsy did not cover that.
There was no direct evidence that the body had been tampered with as suggested in other reports.
The violence has been attributed by police to the Organisasi Papua Merdeka (OPM) or Free Papua Movement, the poorly equipped independence fighters who have been battling Jakarta's rule over the predominantly Melanesian region for decades. But the Timika commander of OPM, Kelly Kwalik, told the Jakarta Globe his fighters neither had the desire, nor the equipment, for the attacks.
High-powered weapons issued to military and police were used in the attack on Mr Grant's vehicle on Saturday and the ambush of police and security guards. While Freeport's Grasberg mine has long been a source of resentment by indigenous Papuans, it has also been a lucrative business opportunity for Indonesian security forces. As well as getting paid by Freeport for security, they have also earned significant sums by levying fees on locals who illegally mine the area for gold and copper.
Other Papuans have pointed to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's re-election as a possible factor. Any rapprochement with Papuans in his second term, they say, would loosen the security forces' vice-like grip on the region and be strongly resisted.
