CAMBRIDGE -- Police unions today called on President Obama and Governor Deval Patrick to apologize to "all law enforcement personnel," saying they "deeply resent the implication" of their comments about racial profiling and the arrest of an African-American scholar last week at his home near Harvard Square.

Speaking at a press conference at the Hotel Marlowe packed with local and national media, the union officials also said that the disorderly conduct charge should not have been dropped against professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. The move earlier this week to drop the charges, "was a decision made without our input," said Alan J. McDonald, a lawyer for one of the unions.

The harshest words came from Steve Killian, who identified himself as a third generation Cambridge police officer and president of the city's police patrol officers association.

"As far as the president's comments, the governor's comments, and comments that I did not hear that our mayor made, I think when the time is right they should make an apology to us," Killian said. "I think the president should make an apology to all law enforcement personnel throughout the entire country, [they] took offense to this."

Killian continued, "Cambridge police are not stupid. I am proud to represent the officer of the Cambridge Police Department."

During a nationally televised press conference on Tuesday night, Obama said that Cambridge police "acted stupidly." The president defended the remark the next day, telling ABC News, “I think it was a pretty straightforward commentary that you probably don’t need to handcuff a guy, a middle-aged man who uses a cane, who is in his own home."

Governor Patrick described the arrest as "troubling" and drew on his own experiences with law enforcement and racial profiling as black teenager at Milton Academy in the 1970s. “In some ways, this is every black man’s nightmare and a reality for black men, "Patrick told a crush of reporters on Thursday at the State House.

The firestorm began on July 16, when Cambridge police responded to a report of a break-in at Gates's home on Ware Street near Harvard University. A passerby called police when she spotted Gates and another man pushing on his front door, which was jammed. A confrontation ensued and police led Gates away in handcuffs only to drop the charges four days later.

Also, I was reading that this officer is involved in community/civic activities (he volunteers) alongside people of color and has shown them much respect in the past....he has alot of personal integrity and look how the prez is treating him..

Talk about showing true colors. The shvartza President was trying to kill two birds with one stone.
He thought he would take the media attention off his half baked health care plan and play to his negro base in the in the process. To his surprise he did not get the results he desired in either case. It seems public opinion has shifted against his proposed health care plan and the shift is  stronger then he has anticipated.  Moreover the picture he painted about police abuse against blacks and other minorities did not go over as well as he thought it would.

I think you are wrong to say he should not accept the beer.  If I was the cop and he did this to me, I would certainly accept the beer.

Heres why:
1. I will get lot of publicity, I am not joe nobody anymore.
2. I can on television or in a publicized way openly voice my views in a humble, respectable manner.
3. I can show myself as a dignified, respectable and public servant who upholds virtue.

The guy should accept the invitaiton, because the fact the "Evil white cop" is sipping beer with the black prez will make all the Obama kool-aid drinkers shut their mouth cause now he is condiered a respectable person in the public eye.  When the article first came out, all the media was writing about how evil and racist the police officer was until they found out that this cop, was not some rookie backwoods racist putz, like they had hoped.  Gates Jr. hismelf found ihimself with a shoe in his mouth when he realized he picked a fight with the wrong cop.  The guy tried to save the life of a black Celtics basketball player, he is considered one of the most well-respected police officers in his district and respected by both black and white cops.  Every person who talks about the guy revels about how great of a person he is, its almost impossible to find any dirt on the guy.  Finally, he is an instructor and specialist on how to avoid racial profiling, which he teaches to other LE officers.  OOPS.. Mistah (i mean Professah) Gates Jr, looks like you picked the fight with the wrong white boy.



He should accept the beer, because:
1. HE will then be considered loving , compassionate and his story will be told.
2. Gates Jr is now getting less press attention than the great, heroic white cop. Which is good.
3. If he refuses, he will be considerd by all the libs as an unapologetic racist backwoods hillybilly cop. 
4. By being a gentleman and respectful to the gangstah prez, he will show the world how stupid these negro kool-aid drinkers really are.
