Tattoos?
FreedomFighter08:
I've heard from many sides, some people saying that it is forbidden in Judaism, and some people saying that Judaism only states that you should love how G-D made you and not ruin it.
I've heard people saying that you can't be buried in a Jewish cemetery with tattoos. But many people I know that were in the IDF have Jewish tattoos on them and I don't think that they're going to get banned. An orthodox Rabbi told me that it's mostly a old wives tale about the banning in cemeteries used to scare their children into not getting tattoos.
What is the communities take on this?
Moshe92:
Tattoos of course are forbidden in Judaism. It is just a myth that Jews with tattoos cannot be buried in Jewish cemeteries. People who do much worse get buried in Jewish cemeteries. It seems strange that so many people believe that myth about the cemeteries. I once heard a gentile girl ask if holocaust survivors can be buried in Jewish cemeteries despite their tattoos.
muman613:
In the past I have heard that the righteous Jews were buried apart from the non-righteous Jews. I think that is fine. I would not want to be buried next to a pork-eating, Shabbat & Yom Tov Desecrating, reform Jew.
Lewinsky Stinks, Dr. Brennan Rocks:
What is the Jewish opinion of Gentiles getting tattoos? Is it wrong for Gentiles also?
Lisa:
Bonesfan, as far as I know, Jews don't care what non-Jews do among themselves, as long as they don't bother Jews. But perhaps Muman can weigh in on this as well?
