The United States has been the world’s sole superpower since the fall of the Soviet Union in the early ‘90s, but as far as most Americans are concerned, we haven’t made any new friends since then.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey asked adults to rate the United States’ relationship with 18 other countries whose names are regularly and prominently in the headlines. A majority of Americans agreed seven of them are America’s allies, but there’s no surprising new names in the bunch.
Canada leads the list. Eighty-six percent (86%) of Americans view their neighbor to the north as an ally. Just four percent (4%) say Canada is an enemy, and seven percent (7%) say it’s somewhere in between an ally and enemy.

Great Britain, which has had a special relationship with America for centuries, is in a virtual tie with Canada, another of its former colonies. Eighty-five percent (85%) say Britain is an American ally, although five percent (5%) say it’s an enemy. For six percent (6%), Britain is somewhere in between the two. (see trends)

Israel is next, with 70% of Americans rating the Jewish state as a U.S. ally. Eight percent (8%) view Israel as an enemy, and 16% place it somewhere in between.

These views of Israel are a far cry, however, from how most Americans view the other prominent nations in the Middle East. Egypt is the next most highly regarded, but only 39% say the Muslim-dominated nation is an ally.

The plurality (49%) of Americans say that if Israel launches an attack against Iran because of that country’s continuing nuclear weapons development program, the United States should help Israel. Thirty-seven percent (37%) believe the United States should do nothing.

Next come America’s former enemies from World War II, both of which emerged from that conflict with U.S. help to become major economic powers and world players once again. Two-thirds of Americans (66%) say Germany is now a U.S. ally. Just five percent (5%) see it as an enemy, with 26% who say it is somewhere in between.

Japan is regarded as an American ally by 59% of adults, but 10% say it’s still an enemy. Twenty-four percent (24%) think of Japan as somewhere in between the two.

Then there’s France, critical to America’s war for independence from Britain and an unpredictable friend ever since. The “Freedom Fries” unhappiness of the Iraq war appears to have worn off, however, because 61% of Americans view France as an ally, while only four percent (4%) say it’s an enemy. But 29% think of France as somewhere in between.

In March 2006, only 18% of Americans said France was an ally in the war on terror.

Mexico, another friend with whom we have had bumpy relations, is the only other nation that a majority of Americans view as an ally. Fifty-four percent (54%) see Mexico that way. Eleven percent (11%) say Mexico is an enemy, and 29% put America’s southern neighbor somewhere in between.

The new findings actually mark a sizable jump in the number who see Mexico as an ally from April when the Mexican government was seeking restrictions on U.S. gun sales it argued were linked to growing drug-related violence. Americans also have consistently complained about the tide of illegal immigration from Mexico, although in recent months the increase in Mexican drug-related crime along the border has become a greater concern.

Noticeably absent from the list of America’s friends are China and Russia, former Cold War enemies who are still viewed that way by many Americans. But then just 27% of U.S. voters regard the United Nations as an ally of the United States. Rasmussen Reports will release America’s enemies list tomorrow.
