(IsraelNN.com) Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, who arrived in Washington on Saturday, plans to urge United States officials to expedite the delivery of American arms to the Lebanese military. Suleiman’s week-long Washington visit comes at a time of great political turmoil for his country. Lebanon’s government is currently comprised of an uneasy coalition of factions loyal to either the Islamic states or to the Western powers. While groups like Hezbollah represent Syrian and Iranian interests in Lebanon, Suleiman – a former chief of staff of the Lebanese army – views the Americans as his political patrons.
The US has for a long time provided military assistance to Lebanon, including $410 million to the Lebanese army and police forces. But America has not handed over any sophisticated weaponry for fear they could end up in the hands of Hezbollah.
