Egyptian reports Saturday said that Hamas riots at the Rafiach-Sinai border had succeeded in forcing Cairo to move construction of the underground steel barrier Egypt is building on the border to an unpopulated area, in order to avoid demonstrations by Gaza Arabs. The move will leave some 400 tunnels running under the border unaffected by the barrier.
A Hamas spokesperson said that the Hamas government was trying to "work with Egyptian officials" on the construction of the barrier. Hamas is said to fear that there is an "international conspiracy" to isolate Hamas.
