As a result, many local commentators predict the process will cause a significant partisan fight next year.
In 2012, the House seat representing the state’s 3rd Congressional district and currently occupied by Democrat Charlie Melancon will be vacated, but according to TheHill.com, the seat may be eliminated after the upcoming census.
Republican Party Chairman Roger Villere noted that because of the uncertainty, many strong and viable GOP candidates, such as Representative Nickie Monica and Louisiana Army National Guard Brigadier General Hunt Downer, have not yet started to raise campaign money, even though they expressed their interest in running.
On the Democratic side, there is some uncertainty as well, but John Bernhardt, a senior strategist for the Louisiana Democratic Party, has said that redistricting is not likely to radically alter the 3rd district, which has historically been won by conservative Democrats.
"Redistricting could favor a moderate Republican, but in no way do I think the district could be redrawn in a way to make a conservative Republican appealing. Or for that matter a liberal Democrat," he stated, quoted by the news provider.
According to the Rose Institute, Republicans currently hold six of the seven Congressional seats in the state.
