The government of Iraq has asked the United States to return to it ancient Jewish books and ritual objects that the U.S. Army rescued when it invaded Iraq. The cache, consisting of books, scrolls, documents, photos and ritual objects had been stored underground by Saddam Hussein's forces, covered by sewage. The items were brought to the U.S., where they were dried out and stored in special safes.
According to an agreement with the new Iraqi government, the items were supposed to be returned to Iraq after two years. However, Jewish groups in the U.S. have opposed returning them to Iraq, and have asked that they be transferred to a Jewish museum, such as the Museum of Iraqi Jewish History in Israel.
