Beersheba memorial for Turkish troops defaced

'Well done IDF' spray-painted on memorial honoring Turkish troops who died in World War One. Former mayor: Act also crime against Jewish nation

Vandals defaced a Beersheba memorial honoring Turkish troops who died in the Land of Israel during World War One. Police have launched an investigation.

"Kol Hakavod Letzahal (Well done IDF)" was spray-painted on the monument's base and the Turkish flag flown next to the Israeli one was burnt.

Beersheba Mayor Rubik Danilovich denounced the act as "violent and thuggish".

Former mayor Eliyahu Nawi said the act constitutes "a crime against the Jewish nation and Jewish history. Despite the current tensions with the Turkish government, we mustn't forget that after the expulsion from Spain only Turkey opened its gates to (the Jews).

"I call on the police to punish the vandals and urge the mayor to repair the damaged monument," he said.

About 1,000 people demonstrated Thursday evening outside Turkey's embassy in Tel Aviv, expressing their anger over Ankara's conduct in the wake of the raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla.

Some protestors hurled stones and a smoke grenade at the embassy. Three people were arrested by police at the scene, as mounted officers and riot police attempted to keep the demonstrators at bay.

Many of those present outside the Yarkon Street consulate held up Israeli flags and signs condemning the Turkish government. "Erdogan is a terrorist," some chanted, referring to Turkey's leader, while others chanted "Let the IDF win" and "Zoabi, go to Gaza," referring to the Arab-Israeli Knesset member who was aboard the raided ship.

Re:  Former Beersheba Mayor Eliyahu Nawi:   ...the act constitutes "a crime against the Jewish nation and Jewish history. Despite the current tensions with the Turkish government, we mustn't forget that after the expulsion from Spain only Turkey opened its gates to (the Jews). "

Former Mayor Nawi remembers well that the Turkey of 1492 opened its doors to Jews, but he seems to have symptoms of advanced dementia.

Mayor Nawi conveniently forgets Turkey's genocide of the Armenian people.

Nor dies he comprehend that a "memorial honoring Turkish troops who died in World War One" is one honoring troops fighting for a country which was an ally of Germany in both WWI and WWII.

Due to Turkey and Germany's long history of commerce and trade with each other, it would seem only natural for them to remain closely allied during times of international conflict, for reasons of shared diplomatic, business, and strategic interests which would supercede their obvious political or religious differences.

And it is perhaps only to be expected that German Jews who settled Eretz Yisrael before and after both World Wars, those who had long perceived themselves to be more German than Jewish, would continue in their previous world view with regard to the Turks.

Even so, I get the strong "feeling" that ex Mayor Nawi's protest and rebuke derive only from the fact that his complimentary "all expenses paid" vacations to Istanbul, to which he'd grown quite accustomed over the past ten years, have now come to an abrupt and ugly end.

His behavior is that of the stereotypical Kapo - more than eager to betray his own nation and people - a disgrace as a human being.

Turkey has turned traitor.  No friend to Israel.
