Following Israel's interception of a blockade-running flotilla, officials in the World Council of Churches (WCC) and some Palestinian Christian groups roundly condemned Israel's commando raid, which left nine alleged "peace activists" on one of the ships dead.
Mark Tooley, president of The Institute on Religion & Democracy (IRD), argues that Israel was acting in self-defense. And he points out that the WCC and others ignored video of the activists beating up Israeli soldiers with metal poles. "In less than 24 hours, the World Council of Churches...the Presbyterians...the Methodists and others...harshly condemned Israel in that incident," he laments.
But the IRD president goes on to add that those same groups have been silent about the revelation that the sinking of a South Korean ship in March was done by a North Korean torpedo. "Two months have passed since the North Korean regime sank a South Korean boat and killed over 40 South Koreans -- and the silence over that continues," he notes.
Tooley concludes that with the exception of Israel and the United States, the liberal denominations will not criticize any nations about human rights violations.
