Rangel a liability to the party

The head of an ethics watchdog organization believes New York Congressman Charles Rangel is becoming an increasing liability to the Democratic Party, and that is why a House panel is moving forward with filing ethics charges against him.

RangelA House investigative committee has charged the Democratic lawmaker with multiple ethics violations, including misuse of official stationery, use of rent-subsidized New York apartments, and failure to publicly disclose financial information as required. The House Ethics Committee is expected to publicly disclose the charges next Thursday against the former chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.

The allegations deal a serious setback to Rangel and complicate the election-year outlook for the Democratic Party.

Ken Boehm is chairman of the National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC), which filed a complaint against Rangel. He says Democrats are moving forward now in order to cut their losses.

Ken Boehm (NLPC)"To the degree that the Ethics Committee has only done one of the issues," Boehm explains. "That was the issue of the improper Carribean junket, the illegal junket, which was based on...the National Legal and Policy Center's complaint and [which] forced him to step down from Ways and Means."

The NLPC chairman suggests that while congressional junkets are not uncommon, "...everybody in town knows that there were far more serious issues [involving Rangel], including tax evasion, all sorts of improper of use of corporate assets for his campaign headquarters, soliciting money from deep-pocket interests for the Charlie Rangel Institute."

Boehm says the American people are fed up with the corruption in Congress, which is why he believes a recent Gallup poll showed that only 11 percent of the public has any confidence in the legislative branch of the federal government.

Charles Rangel is the poster child for corrupt black politicians...Not to say there are not white corrupt politicians however the white ones seem to be called onto the carpet much sooner then their black counterparts... For some reason the I.R.S is very understanding when people like Rangel forget to pay their income tax or mingle different monies together that should not be mingled... They keep saying how this guy is going to be made to answer for the many infractions he has made over the years but at the end of the day because he is black he will be allowed to walk off into the sunset with very little problems at all.
