I am too young to remember that.  I only read about it years later.  About having sex that way, I remember reading something a psychiatrist once wrote about the quickness with which men can achieve orgasm with novel stimulus (e.g.: a new partner)--it was very fast.  A trip home probably would have been considered a time waster for these folks.  I have known many gay men who would never have sex like this: impersonal, debauched, etc.  Then again, I am talking after the AIDS epidemic began
