Israel daylight plunged in to premature gloom
« on: September 11, 2010, 06:32:50 PM »
Two months before the rest of the world, clocks go back one hour in Israel tonight.

A whole precious hour of daylight in Israel is prematurely lopped off solely because the Shas party (whom Chaim calls "the most unbelievably evil party in Israel) wants to save their mentor Ovadia "Kessef" "Yusuf" Yosef the 'ardour' of an extra hour's fasting on Yom Kippur next week!

It cannot be got through to these pseudo-Orthodox imbeciles that the fast will still be 25 hours no matter what. Meanwhile the effect of premature nightfall results in hundreds of road accidents and deaths, millions of $$$ in unnecessary electricity usage, depressing people through lack of sunlight, as well as igniting a hatred in the populace for Sefardic "primitivi" Orthodox politicians.

As usual in Israel, even mass opposition achieve nothing http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3949359,00.html

I cannot believ it! Yom Kippur fast ends about 25 hours after it started (or 72 minutes after sunset according to Rabbeiunu Tam). In both cases it depends on the sun and stars and NOT on the clocks. Taking the clocks back will not change nothing, except for that fact that perhaps, if when the fats ends, it's early according to clocks, some shops could open for a while and ppl may have the opportunity to buy something for dinner. But I doubt Rav Yoseph is interested in that.

Re:  "NEVER underestimate the Israeli (ie everyone BORN in Israel) capacity for stupidity: "

Do you have any idea why this seems to be the case?

Is it because of the "ramshackle" throw-together way the modern state was founded?

Major war every decade?

Bolshevik influence from E. Europe?  Remnants of Turkish rule?  The weather and geography?

It appears that imbecility, inefficiency, and corruption are institutionalized on a grand scale.

By all accounts Israelis have abandoned the hope of ever being able to effect change and reform to make things better.

Another question:

Is there anything in Israel which actually works efficiently and with positive results?

From what I am reading lately Israel appears to be as corrupt as the worst banana republic in all of recorded history - complete with police shakedowns of Israelis for cash and each and every bureaucrat with their hand out for bribes in order to get anything done.

Worse still -- The argument could be made that the age old dream of "The Ingathering of the Exiles" has been reduced to a cynical business racket called aliyah , whereby the government of the State encourages immigration only for the purposes of having new assets to tax up to 80%, having little or no regard for whether or not olim remain in the country after three years.  And the "Zionist dream" of a State where Jews hold all the positions in a normal society is now reduced to an "exploitation state" importing slave labor from Africa, Asia, and eastern Europe to do all the menial and hard labor, exactly as America does here with importing illegal aliens and having them displace American citizens.  There are more than a few tales of contracted laborers entering Israel being dispossessed of their earnings and freedom, sometimes sent home penniless after several years of hard toil.  I really have a hard time understanding how such a once valiant and heroic nation admired all over the world has become so thoroughly corrupt in only sixty years.  There must be something about "The Middle East" which just turns everything and everyone there into drek.

According to an Israeli I know daylight savings in Israel always happens this time of year.

Thanks to Shas the hour in Israel was set by law in 2005 to go back the shabbes before Yom Kippur, in late September or October.

This year Yom Kippur comes comes early, so it's causing a stink.

How would you like sunset in mid September in NY already at 5.30pm?!

Although he was Sefardi Chief Rabbi & a scholar, Ovadia Yosef, head of Shas, who has upheld Oslo, and whom already 10 years ago Chaim called "a complete moron", is responsible for this evil premature hour going back.

:::D..... People in Israel may have more time for after dinner activities and it may lead to an increase in the birth rate  :) Personally I find the day short enough... Loosing daylight hours like that is actually a sin in my opinion.

Great points.  It's a really stupid thing that Shas fights for.

For those wondering what the benefit is, since the fast is still 25 hours - It puts one extra hour into the night time as opposed to the following day.   So it will seem like less time to wait in order to eat upon waking up the next day.

In other words, people eat a nice meal right before the fast begins, late afternoon let's say, then the fast begins, some praying and people go to sleep.    Then they wake up and have X hours left of the fast to get through the following day, until sundown occurs.    So since one of these X hours has occurred the day before, after eating and before sleeping, it's "less difficult" (or so it might seem) to get through the fast with X-1 hours remaining beginning the next morning.

Of course for all that this decision sacrifices and how little is gained by it, it ends up making Orthodox Jews look very selfish, and the shas party look criminally corrupt, as always.

That's crazy! It doesn't get dark here until around 7:30 pm or so.

During the Palestine Mandate the British kept Palestine to "Double Summer Time" for the whole year i.e. for 21 years the Sun would set really late over Eretz Yisroel: "G-d bless the British"!

Damn the British for the untold amount of Jewish blood on their hands. [how many Jews died at the hands of Hitler when the British forbade Jews from leaving Europe to E"Y during the Holocaust... despite being promised a "Jewish Homeland" by the English tyrants. -- These Jews never got to "enjoy" "double time summer".]

F--- the Brits.  I'm glad the Muslims will finish them off, its about damn time.

The Gerer Rebbe said that it was decreed from Above that the Ishmaelitic Turks could not give back Eretz Yisrael directly to the Am Yisrael in 1917, and that it had to go through an intermediary and be held for a short time in the hands of the Edomitic/Japhetic British, before they relinquished it in 1948.

And that makes the british good?

::)   Obviously it doesn't, even if this pointless quotation is true.

Btw, when the Gerer Rebbe or ANYONE says that after the fact, when these things have already happened, wouldn't everyone on earth (all believers, at least) agree that what already happened was "decreed from Above" to happen?  What is interesting about any Rebbe saying such a thing?

So want to give us the date of the quote?
