A man charged with aggravated assault last week after being shot by his wife last month was released from the hospital and booked into the Chatham County jail, a sheriff’s office website revealed Thursday afternoon.

About 11:30 a.m. Aug. 24, metro police were called to a Windsor Forest home on the 300 block of Woodley Road after residents heard gunfire and then saw 27-year-old Charlie McLaughlin III lying in a front yard. His wife, 24-year-old Marlena McLaughlin, was across the street and had been badly beaten, with swollen eyes and cuts and bruises on most of her exposed skin, police officials have said.

The McLaughlin’s children were present during the fight, police have said.

Charlie McLaughlin was taken to Memorial University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. On Sept. 8, metro police announced he would face charges of aggravated assault and cruelty to children.

As of Thursday night, Charlie McLaughlin remained in the jail awaiting a court hearing.

Marlena McLaughlin is a soldier in the 3rd Infantry Division's Combat Aviation Brigade.
