Press release from Tax Revolt Party Candidate and safety advocate Elizabeth (“Liz”) Berney:
MOTHERS AGAINST STONED DRIVING
There are numerous reasons to vote against re-electing Congressman Gary Ackerman. I (Liz Berney, candidate of the Tax Revolt Party) and Ackerman’s other opponent, Dr. Milano, have been these pointing out. Ackerman supported the high taxes which harm New Yorkers (New York sends $25 billion a year to other states, resulting in state deficits and increased property taxes here) and excessive spending which will burden our children with mountains of debt. Ackerman falsely accused Israelis of perpetrating “pogroms” and criticized Israel’s lifesaving checkpoints during Congressional hearings (Feb. 12, 2009 and Mar. 12, 2008), sent our tax dollars to hate-mongering Palestinian leaders, and is supported by the radical anti-Israel group J-street. To name just a few.
This week, Ackerman added another reason to vote against him. At an October 25 candidates’ night, Ackerman stated that he wants to legalize and tax marijuana, just like alcohol.
Why? Congressional Democrats are in trouble because of their high tax and spend, appeasement and misguided health care policies. So Democratic strategists have advised Democratic Congressional candidates to support legalizing marijuana - to win marijuana users’ votes! In other words, they are willing to sacrifice health and safety for votes.
Marijuana’s physical effects include impaired motor coordination, impaired memory, slowed reaction time, difficulty concentrating, increased heart rate, an increased risk of heart attack, and lung damage from carcinogens. Even Obama opposes legalization!
Marijuana use hurts others in addition to the user. We’ve worked hard to bring auto accidents down in this country. Auto safety advocates (including me) have fought for safer cars and tires. Mothers Against Drunk Driving led the fight to strongly enforce drunk driving laws. These efforts have been succeeding. In 2009, auto accident deaths fell to 33,808, the lowest number since 1950. Injuries fell to 2.217 million people in 2009. But too many people are still hurt. And, one third of fatal crashes are still alcohol-related. Legalizing marijuana will result in more impaired drivers on the road, and will reverse the efforts to reduce traffic fatalities.
There is no reason to legalize a health damaging, auto-accident causing drug. There is every reason to vote Ackerman out of Congress next Tuesday, November 2nd!
Elizabeth (Liz) Berney, Esq., is a Republican Committeewoman and the candidate for Congress of the Tax Revolt Party. Liz’s diverse legal experience has included prosecuting auto safety cases, including the Firestone Tire / Ford Rollover cases.

Dr. James Milano, the 2010 Republican Candidate in the 5th Congressional District agrees with Elizabeth Berney's commentary.
I attended the Candidates Forum at St. John's and am witness to Gary Ackerman's comments that evening being the way Liz Berney described.
