Is Calif. gradually shifting toward conservatism?

A political commentator says the outcome of the attorney general's race in California indicates that the state has a new generation of voters with different political and social values.

Joel Fox, editor of Fox & Hounds Daily, says Kamala Harris' win in the attorney general's race would not have played out a generation ago because of the values of the California electorate then.

"She comes from a very liberal city, and she had no support from her hometown police. Every police association in the state supported her opponent, [and] most of the district attorneys did [because] she's anti-death penalty," Fox points out. "So a generation ago in California with those credentials, that candidate would not win the attorney general's race."

Joel Fox (Fox & Hounds)The Fox & Hounds editor attributes the shift in voter values to the change in the state's demographics, as the foreign-born population has nearly doubled and the voice of minority voters has grown increasingly strong. "So we have dents in demographics dealing with our voters, and that, I believe, is clearly reflected in Harris' victory for the position of attorney general," he suggests.

Fox further contends that Harris' stance against Proposition 8 may have helped her as well, and he believes California voters resonated with the Democrat because she pushed environmental issues.

"I know one of the things that she heavily advertised was her strong stand on the environment; that was in a lot of her commercials," the commentator notes. "And California voters are clearly sensitive to the environmental issues."

Even though the values of "Reagan Country" do not currently dominate California, Fox still believes a future shift towards conservatism is likely.
