Suicide bomber kills 33 waiting at Afghan recruitment centre as insurgent increase attacks in north of country

A suicide bomber posing as an army volunteer hit an Afghan recruitment centre this morning, killing at least 33 people.

The attacker approached the centre on foot and detonated his explosive vest in the middle of a group of army volunteers lined up outside in Kunduz, northern Afghanistan.

Militants appear to be waging an intense campaign to frighten people from working with security forces and the Afghan government in the region.

Violence has increased in the north as international forces have flooded Taliban strongholds in the south.

Today's attack was the second suicide bombing in five days in Kunduz, where Al Qaeda, the Taliban and numerous other militant groups have increased their presence.

Ambulances and private cars brought at least 42 wounded to Kundux hospital. Among the dead were four children.

President Hamid Karzai condemned the attack and vowed retribution against those responsible.

The same recruitment centre was targeted in another attack in December which killed eight soldiers and a policeman. The Taliban claimed it was behind that bombing.

Kunduz is a known hide-out for the Taliban, Al Qaeda and fighters from militant factions including the Haqqani network, Hizb-i-Islami and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan.

The province is also a major agricultural and transit center along a main highway into Tajikistan.

NATO increased convoys in the north after shipments from Pakistan came under more frequent attack.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing on Thursday which killed Kunduz police chief Abdul Rahman Sayedkhili and two of his bodyguards.

In February, a suicide bomber killed 30 people waiting in line for identification cards at another government office.

In October, Kunduz governor Mohammad Omar was killed by a bomb as he prayed in a mosque. Nineteen other worshippers were killed.

That assassination took place just days after he had warned that Taliban and foreign fighters were increasing their presence in the north.
