Stabbed to death over a BlackBerry: Boy of 15 is killed protecting his younger brother from a gang

A boy of 15 was fatally stabbed as he tried to save his brother’s life when they were attacked by a gang over a BlackBerry mobile phone.
Negus McClean bled to death from stab wounds to his chest and thigh as his 13-year-old brother Elijiah wept at his side.
The brothers were chased by up to nine masked youths on bicycles on Sunday night after they went out for a takeaway.

Negus and Elijiah tried to escape but were surrounded by a mob who set upon the older boy with knives, fists and a metal bar.
The youths, who had bandanas over their faces, then fled on their bicycles, leaving their victim lying in a pool of blood. He was taken to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, East London, but died later from his injuries.
Last night a family friend told how she watched helplessly as Negus was attacked in Edmonton, North London.
Cheryl Law said: ‘They were punching him and then another one came along and he started  hitting him with a metal pole. There was absolutely nothing I could do.
‘The boy was lying down on his back. He just looked completely lifeless. The brother was so upset. It was terrible. He was crying out, “It’s my brother, my big brother”.

‘Tears were streaming down his face. That was the worst moment. All of us were so helpless while Negus lay there dying in front of us.’
Heartbroken family and friends paid tribute to the teenager who was described by relatives as intelligent, mature and a talented musician.
His aunt Ann Adams, 49, said: ‘He had a heart of gold. He loved his little brother so much.
‘They had gone out to get chicken and chips together when the gang set upon them. He saved his brother’s life by telling him to get off his bike and run.
‘He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Elijiah phoned me screaming after it had happened. He’s in shock. They were so close as brothers.
'Negus wasn’t in a gang, I don’t know if he even knew his attackers. He was a joker, full of life, who loved his family and friends.’

Wiping back tears his cousin Noel Adams, 25, added: ‘He was selflessly protecting his brother and he died because of that. His family are praying for his killers.’
Negus’s churchgoing parents Ingrid and Christopher were said to be ‘distraught’. Local resident Michael Athnasiou said the streets of Edmonton have become overrun by teenage gangs.
He added: ‘The gangsters are getting out of control. It is very scary.’
Negus, who would have been 16 in two weeks, attended Edmonton County School. Head Dr Susan Tranter expressed her ‘sorrow and deepest sympathies’ to his family.
He is the fourth teenager to have been stabbed to death in London this year.
Locals claimed the fight started over a BlackBerry. But sources close to the inquiry said the stabbing was in retaliation for a previous attack.
Police arrested four males aged 14, 16, 18 and 20 early yesterday on suspicion of murder.
