A father-of-seven who assaulted two brothers in separate incidents has been jailed.

Abdirashid Abdilaahi (43) was also prosecuted for having a knife.

Leicester Crown Court was told he held a grudge against the teenage brothers from within his – Somali – community because he wrongly believed they had meddled in the break-up of his marriage, by making comments.

He confronted the first victim, an 18-year-old student, on a bus and tried to grab his mobile phone, on January 9. He grasped the victim's wrist and unsuccessfully tried to headbutt him.

On January 18, outside a school, Abdilaahi accosted the same victim while chewing khat, an African plant.

David Outterside, prosecuting, said the defendant was "ranting" and spat chewed khat on to the victim.

Later that day, the defendant was at a bus stop in Green Lane Road, in the city, when he encountered the victim's 17-year-old brother.

Abdilaahi punched the youth on the shoulder.

The boy pushed him out of the way and, when the defendant produced a Swiss army knife, kicked it out of his hand.

Abdilaahi, of no fixed address, picked up the knife and was again disarmed with a kick.

When police caught up with him a month later, an officer saw him holding a knife, which he dropped.

Abdilaahi was jailed for a total of 18 months.

He admitted three counts of common assault, having an offensive weapon in East Park Road and possessing a bladed article in the club.

James Bide-Thomas, in mitigation, said: "As a result of taking khat and other substances, he's not been in the best of mental health.

"Since being remanded into custody he's had treatment and is determined to stay away from substances in future."

Abdilaahi was made the subject of an indefinite restraining order banning any contact with the brothers.
