Many years ago, on the way to a pegisha in Crown Heights, we stopped at a convenience store off the Turnpike for gas. A 50+ y.o. woman who worked at the convenience store was a former Satmar. I don't know the details of her story, but she apparently fled her Satmar family in Williamsburg and never returned. Anyone who knows anything about growing up in that kind of community knows she must be an exceptionally strong, determined, independent woman.
