The establishment of the GOP--besides continuing to give businesses the illegal aliens that they want-- thinks they have to pander to Hispanic voters by giving amnesty to illegal aliens.
A high percentage of illegal aliens come from Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries so they assume that they're all Hispanic. This assumption is wrong.
Look at a recent article by the pundit Dick Morris (from his site):
"The Republican Party can decide whether it lives or dies by whether or not it blocks the immigration compromise from passing this year. If they stop it from going through and a Democratic President pushes it through a Democratic Congress in 2009, the GOP will suffer as much among Hispanic voters as it did among black voters after Barry Goldwater crusaded against the Civil Rights Bill in his 1964 election campaign. Until Goldwater did that, blacks usually voted Republican. Kennedy won over about 60% of them when he called Correta Scott King while her husband was in jail. But LBJ got the 90% of the black vote that has since become his party’s expected share as a direct result of Goldwater’s campaign.
If the Republican Party passes this bill while a GOP president can still sign it and take partisan credit for it, they will have a very good chance of winning the Latino vote in the future. If not, they will be ground under the demographic changes in America just as the Labor Party was in the early years of the 20th century."
Morris assumes that most Hispanics want amnesty for illegal aliens, including the ones from Spanish speaking countries. If his assumption is true, then they are selfish because they don't care about the best interests of the country.
Morris knows more about politics than O'Reilly. However, O'Reilly pointed out that most immigrant groups tend to vote for Democrats because Democrats try to promote welfare programs.
So Morris thinks the GOP will be screwed if it doesn't embrace amnesty. O'Reilly thinks the GOP will be screwed and there will be a one-party system for many years, if it does embrace amnesty.
The Republicans who say they're conservative should vote against amnesty. If Hispanics voters disown the GOP as a result, then that's too bad. Policies can't be based on what La Raza thinks--they're not even Hispanic.
This thread isn't meant to criticize all Hispanics. There are some great and intelligent ones like Hail Columbia.
