They probably vomited, I think you'd do that too if you saw a man take great pleasure in decapitating an infant.

I heard that in Tobruk, Rommel received orders from Hitler that any jews found there were to be executed. It was said that he held a staff meeting with his officers, held up the comunique in question and trembled with rage and told them that these orders would NEVER be carried out and they would strictly adhere to the Geneva convention. If this is true, there is hope for Rommel's soul.

In the context of WWII, it was impossible to fight for Germany but not Hitler.
It's absurd to think a differentiation can be made.

Does it matter what Rommel actually thought of Hitler, National Socialism or the genocide of Europe's Jews ? 

In the final analysis, Rommel used his tactical military brilliance as a General in Hitler's Wermacht. His undisputed mastery of blitzkreig served to further Hitler's goals and delayed the eventual Allied victory.

Yes, Rommel was a fantastic General, perhaps the best of WWII, but in evaluating his overall historical legacy as a moral human being, we can not lose sight of who he took his orders from and the deleterious effect his military genius had on delaying Hitler's defeat.
