Is Gaza the most densely populated place on Earth?
Many who oppose Israel’s arms blockade of Gaza claim that the territory is “an open-air prison” and “the most densely populated place on earth.”
The Gaza border crossing to Egypt is open for passenger traffic, and the Erez crossing into Israel is closed because of Hamas’ state of war against Israel. Even so, thousands of Gazans are allowed into Israel every year for medical and business reasons. In the other direction, Israel transfers over 100,000 tons of humanitarian goods into Gaza every month – nearly 5,000 truckloads of everything from food to clothing, from agricultural equipment to construction supplies.
However, the question remains: is Gaza the most densely populated place on earth? A comparison to prominent world cities (using data from the UN Statistics Division) reveals that this is far from the case.
Paris and Athens, for example, are more than four times more densely populated than Gaza.
Major American cities like New York, Chicago, Boston, and San Francisco are all more densely populated than Gaza – as are the Israeli cities of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
Take a look at the stats aobve and judge for yourself.
Note that, for the sake of space, this infographic does not include a significant number of other cities with greater population density than Gaza.
