This would only work in certain places.

This image has been making the rounds on facebook. It isn't advocating socialism, exactly, because it is the charity from private individuals and private businesses, rather than from the government. I think something like this would work, but only in certain areas. I can see this working in a place like Italy. If you tried to do this in the USA, it would only attract the lowest, scummiest creatures, and they wouldn't ask in a meek voice at all, they'd come in and demand what "they be owed".

So, as much as I'd like to see this kind of kindness and charity here for those who could truly use a hand up, I know it would never work here.

In an ideal world something like this would be a nice idea however this world is far from ideal... Something like this may have worked 50 or 60 years ago however people today are just to grubby... People that could well afford to pay would be the first to take advantage of the so called pending coffee leaving little or nothing for actual people in need.

Exactly right. I think this made me feel more sad that anything that this wouldn't actually work the way it was intended to, especially in a place like the USA. Now if there was a place that generally had better values and people didn't really want to have to ask for a handout unless they truly needed it, then it could work.
