Mountain Jews of Azerbaijan have expressed outrage at the remarks of Vladimir Solovyov.

Recently the hosts of the Russian radio station 'Vesti FM' Vladimir Solovyov and Anna Saffron made several offensive remarks against the Azerbaijani people, and obscurely interpreted the historical facts of many ethnicities living in Azerbaijan.

 The religious community of Mountain Jews of Azerbaijan responded and addressed the following:
 'I would like to comment on the pro-Armenian attacks on Russian journalists, and add that it is admissible to compare Holocaust with Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict. Holocaust was a caused due to Nazi hatred against the Jewish people. Azerbaijan has never had any Anti-Semitism. Azerbaijan is a civilized and democratic country.
Azerbaijani people are warmhearted and tolerant toward those who come to Azerbaijan with peace and kindness. Jews living in Azerbaijan are deeply outraged by impermissible tone and hysterical remarks against Azerbaijan', stated head of the Mountain Jews community of Azerbaijan, Semen Ikhiilov.
 'Who gave them the right to offend our state? Is today everything based on market economy? Or is this a way for Solovyov to increase his popularity and fame, or perhaps show his unconcealed love for the Armenian nation?' questioned Ikhiilov.

 'Is it possible that Solovyov still does not know the truth about the aggressive nature and conquest of Armenia, about the occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani lands and over one million refugees in their own country? I don’t believe it! The entire world is aware of this. Solovyov is protecting the aggressors, the invaders, and the murderers of hundreds and thousands of innocent Azerbaijani civilians, from elderly to women and children.

The Jewish community in Azerbaijan considers these insulting accusations against our Azerbaijani brothers to be defamatory. I feel ashamed for the comments made by these pseudo-journalists,' concluded Semen Ikhiilov.

Antisemitic activity

As in previous years very few antisemitic incidents were recorded in the region in 2007, despite the antisemitic propaganda of radical Islamist groups. In December it was discovered that a memorial to Holocaust victims in Yerevan (capital of Armenia) was defaced with swastikas and black paint splattered on the Hebrew inscription. A senior advisor to President Robert Kocharian condemned the incident. The memorial was desecrated several times in the past.

On May 9, police in Azerbaijan confiscated twelve copies of an Azeri translation of Mein Kampf. The translator, Aviaz Zeinally, was interrogated and warned not to print more copies. However, he continued printing at a private printing house and the case was reopened in August 2007 for incitement of ethnic hatred.

Antisemitic material can also be found on local Internet sites, such as Muslim Uzbekistan (http://muslimuzbekistan.com) which contains many antisemitic and anti-Zionist articles. The most popular subjects on this site are denial of the Holocaust, accusing the mass media of being controlled by Jews, and descriptions of how the “Zionists” allegedly oppress the Arabs in the Holy Land.
