There was a particular year when the phoney peace process was going particularly bad and it was for the benefit of the Shas party to sound "right wing" so R. Ovadia Yosef issued a letter that although he favored "land for peace" this was for real peace, but not the type of treaty, that everyone who looked at what was taking place, saw clearly that the treaties were just hurting the Jewish people.
There are some good Jews who have been fooled into thinking that R. Ovadia Yosef really changed his mind about the so-called peace process.
He did not. All he was saying was that he did not like the peace process as it was in that particular year. But if someone would make even the slightest changes in the peace process, you could find Shas right back in the "peace camp".
In the elections less than a year before his death, both heads of Shas (Deri and Yishai) were campaigning for the Arab vote and promised they woud support painful concessions on the condition that it is a strong treaty that we know will take hold.
