Amid what appears to be a growing number of price tag attacks, a petition is being published that includes the signatures of at least 100 rabbonim affiliated with the dati leumi community. In the petition they call the so-called price tag attacks a Chilul Hashem. Interestingly, the petition also included some names of people who did not sign, including the late Dr. Baruch Goldstein and Rabbi Chaim Dov Levinson, a writer for Haaretz. Also listed on the petition is Rabbi David Binyamin of the Skuli Farm in Alon Moreh. The rabbi contacted Arutz-7, which published the petition, informing them he did not sign. He name was promptly removed. Rabbi Binyamin was more than a bit perturbed that his name was affixed to the petition, calling the petition a mockery. Some who oppose the petition feel most of the signatories are not leaders in the dati leumi community and therefore the petition is not representative of the Halachic leadership, just the opinion of those who signed the document. In fact, some of the most frightening words come from the Divrei Chaim, who says:

"Before the arrival of Moshiach, most of the rabbis will be from the Erev Rav, because Israel in themselves are holy, but the Erev Rav only work for their own benefit . . . wanting to rule over the public . . . One should only join with those who truly serve G-d and sacrifice themselves to Him, but not in order to receive any benefit." (Divrei Chaim, Parashas Vayakhel, 'Omissions')

Thus, a tell-tale sign of Erev Rav is not what the person does, but his motivation for doing it, which is not always simple to know. However, over time it is clear which leaders serve G-d and His people 'lishmah' - for altruistic reasons - and which ones do so for the sake of some personal benefit. Thus, you can find simple, unlearned but devoted Jews who are cherished by Heaven, and intelligent and well-learned leaders who are self-serving, and despised by Heaven, especially when they fool the public and garner their respect.

The story shared in this video is about the founder of the Sanz Chassidic dynasty, Rabbi Chaim Halberstam (1793-1876), known as the Divrei Chaim, after his work on Jewish Law.  The young girl was Rachel Feige, daughter of Rabbi Baruch Frankel-Teomim.  Rebbe Chaim and Rebbetzin Rachel Feige had eight children.  When she passed away, the Divrei Chaim married again; this marriage produced six children.  The Divrei Chaim was known for his great Torah knowledge, his humility, and his compassion.  Rabbi Baruch used to say, “My son-in-law may have a weak [body] but he has a very strong mind!''

It was the Divrei Chaim's custom not to go to sleep for the night until he had given away every last penny in his house.  Before Sukkot one year, a large donation reached the Rebbe's hands just before the holiday began.  He quickly apportioned this money to someone in town - a man to whom the Rebbe had already given a sum of money.  When the Rebbe's beadle expressed surprise at this, the Rebbe said, "The first sum of money was for the holiday itself.  But the man in heavily in debt.  How could he enjoy the holiday, knowing that after it ended his creditors would be back at the door?  This money," he said, pointing to the new sum, "is for his debts.  Now he can really celebrate."

That night, he told his sons, "Some people decorate their sukkot with pictures, wall hangings, fruit.  But our decorations are even more beautiful: we decorate with tzedakah - charity."
