5V/USB PC cubieboard 1/2/3
« on: January 10, 2014, 11:38:39 AM »

http://cubieboard.org/

I think I found my low power ARM PC. All three models have full HDMI jacks, USB, Ethernet, etc...
All will run android and linux.
I just ordered one, but its coming from China so it may take up to 30 days.

OK it came. It took 15 days to get here.

All I did was plug in HDMI, keyboard, USB power and it started flashing many lights. After a few seconds the built in Android showed up.

I had it running for about a day so far. The AllWinner A20 SoC chip runs warm to the touch. It heats up just a bit when running youtube videos.

Supports 1920x1080p + audio (and seprate headphone jack and line in). Two USBs. Micro SD card.  Supports 2.5" SATA hard drives. Ethernet.

Couldn't believe how fast this thing is. This may replace my regular desktop.

What about specs, and price/performance? What makes it beat the pi?

I paied $60 for it.

The Cubie board and RPi are both ARM based.

I have several pis already.

I've only played with it for a few hours. Haven't had time. But the built in android already plays videos at 1080p. that alone already kicks arse.

The pi is vastly popular. But people are turning their attention to many of the ARM alternatives such as beaglebone.

The down side is I've heard about stability issues with the cubie board series. Also if you look at the specs, no where does it indicate the CPU speed of the A20 processor. It is capable of running at up to 1.6GHz.

What version of Android does it come with?

android 4.2.2
but very stripped down. Which is fine for testing.

One thing I like about the raspberry pi over this and other boards that have built in storage is that if the built in memory fails due to brown outs or your grandma tripping over the cable you can just put in another SD card. The ones with built in storage will brick if the built in memory fails. Unless you solder a new one on.

Another thing, for what a lot of people do, browse web, look at videos, this would suit them well.
Remember when a micro computer was $9000?

What would this be a pico computer?

Give me one of those old AT keyboards any day... They were built tough and felt good to the touch-typist.

I still don't like the on-screen Tablet/Phone keyboard... Even with the real-time spell check/hint keyboard for Android I find myself making typos all over the place... I would NEVER attempt to program using an on-screen touch keyboard...
