NY1 VIDEO: The developer of the proposed mosque near the World Trade Center plans to build a museum devoted to Islam at the site instead.
A spokesman for Sharif El-Gamal says he will build a three-story museum at 45-51 Park Place with a sanctuary for prayer services and community programs.
The plan also calls for green space that would be open to the public.
El-Gamal's original plan for a 15-story, $100 million community center and prayer space created a huge outcry over its proximity to the site of the September 11th attacks.
El-Gamal says he plans to pay for the proposed museum himself, but is hoping to find other investors.
