Some 220 migrants are expected to be brought to Malta later today after having been picked up by a cargo ship. The migrants were expected here this morning but the transfer from the ship to Maltese patrol boats was delayed because of the weather and because the migrants were insisting they did not want to come to Malta but wanted to head on to Italy, sources said.
The migrants, said to be Syrian and including many women and children, were rescued from a fishing boat which was in distress on Thursday some 285 miles south east of Malta.
The ship Eleonora Maersk was directed to pick up the migrants as the wind grew to force seven.
The ship then headed west and is currently off Malta, where the migrants are being transferred to Maltese patrol boats.
