Yehuda Hayisraeli was seriously wounded in the fighting during Operation Protective Edge and today, two years later, he cannot return home. The Defense Minster will not authorize building the necessary ramp for him to be able to live home because he is a settler.

Hayisraeli is in the Givati Brigade’s elite Sayeret Rimon and he was injured on that black Friday in Rafiach when Lt. Hadar Goldin HY”D was abducted via a Hamas tunnel. He was hit with shrapnel in his head and was in a vegetative state for months. B’chasdei Hashem he recently began to show cognitive signs of communication with his surroundings.

His family has requested ramps in the Yishuv Ofra home to permit Yehuda to return home but he is stuck in the rehabilitation facility because of the refusal of the Defense Ministry to accommodate this simple request. Defense Ministry officials explain that the building in Ofra lacks certain registration in the nation’s ‘Taba’ land registration and therefore, in the eyes of the Defense Ministry the home is illegal and therefore, it cannot accommodate the request.

Channel 10 News correspondent Ohr Heller explains the Defense Ministry simply will not build a suitable home to accommodate his needs over the Green Line until special permits are given. At present, the home is not wheelchair accessible so Yehuda cannot return. Realizing something must be done, the Defense Ministry has decided another new structure will have to be built near the family home to accommodate Yehuda since his home is ‘illegal’ and cannot be modified. However, the family explains even this has not happened. Nothing is moving forward.

When asked to respond to the Srugim report, Defense Ministry officials explain “The family has requested funding the construction of living quarters in the yard of their existing home. The request was moved to the appropriate committee this week in an effort to assist above and beyond the letter of the law since there is no permit to build”.

reports the sum has been now been doubled

Ordinary Israelis have raised nearly 1.4 million shekels (approximately $364,000) to renovate the home of a severely injured Israeli war hero, after the government refused to do so because he lives in a "settlement" in Samaria.

Yehuda Yitzhak HaYisraeli was left in a coma for over a year after being critically wounded while fighting in Gaza during 2014's Operation Protective Edge. HaYisraeli was injured in the same incident in which IDF officer Hadar Goldin's was captured by Hamas, and in which two other soldiers were killed. Goldin was later declared killed in action by the IDF, after evidence came to light confirming he had been killed during the abduction attempt.

The married father of two has been hospitalized ever since, but is soon to be discharged and is set to begin a long and painful rehabilitation process back at home in Ofra, in Samaria's Binyamin Region.

To accommodate for his severe disabilities, his home will require expensive renovations - but while the government usually covers such expenses for disabled veterans, this time it is refusing to do so, claiming that HaYisraeli is not illegible as he lives in a "settlement."

That callous decision left the family in dire straights. They didn't posses even a fraction of the approximately 600,000 shekels (approx. $156,000) required for the work, and didn't know where to turn.

So when the grassroots Zionist My Israel group set up an online fundraising campaign the HaYisraeli family were simply grateful for whatever amount would be raised.

Little did they realize that within just a few days - and well ahead of the end date for the campaign - generous Israeli donors would have donated more than double that amount. As of the publication of this article, over 1,390,000 shekels have been donated via the Israeli headstart online fundraising tool.
The article reports also that even a well known leftist politician donated 1000 to the cause. But because he's one of the people to blame for having caused the problem in the first place I did not provide details.
