An attacker with a container of gas and a gun entered the synagogue in the middle of the evening prayer, and asked to meet Chief Rabbi of Moscow, Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, who is also the president of the Conference of European Rabbis.

There were 150 worshipers in the synagogue at the time of the attack.

Security guards removed the attacker to the other side of the sidewalk and called the police. The terrorist drew a gun, probably a teaser, and shot the security guard, injuring him in the face. The Moscow police arrived on the scene quickly, and arrested the attacker.

Rabbi Goldschmidt said that, "The evening prayer was conducted as usual, we will conduct the High Holiday prayers as usual. We work in conjunction with the Moscow police, and I bless the entire Jewish people that they should be 'signed and sealed' for a good year."

Security forces have declared that they will reinforce security in the area of Moscow's Great Synagogue.
