A question about L-vocalization

L-vocalization is a process by which the sound L is replaced by a vowel or a semivowel. It seems that this change occurs in all south Slavic languages. However, Russian doesn't have it. Compare: čitao / читaл.

Why doesn't Russian replace L with a vowel? Slavic languages are the most related Indo-European subgroup, so the Russian exception surprises me.
