1. Are black abolitionists like Douglass and Tubman bad? Are white abolitionists bad?
2. Did you know before reading this that the official name of the federal holiday in February is called Washington's Birthday, and not Presidents' Day?
I remember you said only MLK gets his own day but George Washington and Christoper Columbus also do.
People think the February holiday combined the birthdays of Lincoln and Washington which is not true. Washington's Birthday was celebrated on February 22 from 1879 until 1971. It was only the Uniform Monday Holiday Act that moved it from February 22 to the third Monday in February (between the 15th and the 21st), not because of combining the two birthdays. Some states call it Presidents' Day (though the placement of the apostrophe, if any, varies) and is most often an occasion to remember all U.S. presidents, or to honor Abraham Lincoln's and Washington's birthdays together. Lincoln's Birthday was never a federal holiday.
Many blacks celebrated both Lincoln's and Douglass's brithdays in February which then led to Negro History Week which then became Black History Month. UMM HMM!
Where were you travelling to when you experienced the affirmative action story at JFK that you told two weeks ago?
