As far as I know he has always been supporting democrats and still does. This type of statement used to be mainstream and fit into both parties but not anymore.

I don't think this is serious. So short before the elections.
The only way he can have certain success is if he drudges like a mule and pulls enough support, that he is able to aim for Vice President. But Pence has not said he will step down.
And I think it is not fair, because if they want to put a black person because of winning black votes, Candace Owens and Carol Swain have earned this far more. In addition they are imo more nice, more intelligent and more mentally stable.

Musk definitely seems like a closet-republican. All of his recent tweets are anti-leftist.... he called the lockdowns fascist, he said the 'left is losing the center', and recently tweeted for everyone to 'take the red pill'.
I realize he supported Andrew Yang in the primaries, but Yang himself doesn't feel comfortable with the DNC.
