what is the halachic stance on stem cell research

Definitely prohibited according to my understanding.

I think the research is not prohibited, only the methods of obtaining the stem cells. That is, it is forbidden to initiate abortion for this purpose. But i think it is not prohibited to 'harvest' a fetus that had to be aborted, for example due to medical reasons.
