I'm not for NY but voted I'm too religious and they're self-hating. I didn't even hear about it. What was it?
It was gala they have each year. Matisyahu performed. It's basically a fancy singles party.
-
Well Matityahu is religious so I don't see how bad it could be.
if you are religious and shomer negia...not your crowd...
-
It doesn't seem like they should be using the name IDF.

umm, the money goes to the IDF soldiers...so yes, they shoudl be using their name..
and they aren't self hating...but certainly not as hardcore as JTF...
You guys really need to chill out once in awhile.

Then why would Matityahu perform there? It's like he's endorsing mixed dancing.
Dude it's a singles event...chill out...Not all Jews are religious and shomer negia and use a mekhitza...I personally don't like mekhitzas..and it's not for everyone..It's fine if you need it...but I don't need it.

Is mixed dancing specifically forbidden?
I believe the mitzvah is not to engage in activity that may lead to sin. Mixed dancing conducted in a civilised fashion doesn't neccessarily lead to sin.

You're the one who gave us the idea to call it self-hating in the poll.
I might have given it an idea, but just about everythign to most of you guys is considered self hating when it isn't has hardcore as JTF...I feel it is a misnomenclature...It's quite simple. JTF is really hardcore. I like it. But not everyting Jewish and ISrael necessarily has to be hardcore..And just becuase somethign isn't hardcore doesn't make it self hating. It seems to me that a lot of you find things slgihtly more left wing that JTF to be "self hating"

that's precisely right...but it's a fence built around the Torah. Some Jewish men or women get very tempted when tehy watch or dance wtih the opposite sex and have dirty thoughts. That's fine if it is within their tradition... But dont' make it my tradition. I'm dancin' with teh ladies until i"m married..thenit will be just mywife or myd aughters Gd willing.

So there WAS dancing?
Dancing requires a mechitza that you can't through while on the other during prayer, the mechitza just has to provide a separation between the genders and it is okay that you can see through it as long as you don't stare at the women.
Yaacov, first off not many people were dancing if they were at all. Secondly, you can have all the mekhitzas you want...to don't force someone like me to have one. To each their own...
Secondly this was not an Orthodox event...or Chassidish event..This was a Jewish event..mostly non hardcore Jews, but enough hardcore to not be liberal self hating Jews either...

I didn't know that.
You were the one who used the term self-hating. I never said that in this thread.

Mixed dancing SHOULD be forbidden in your case, Danny! ;)
You'll go the grope in a second flat! :D

Dance with your wife in private.
You can dance with your wife, Gd willing, in private..I will dance with my wife, Gd willing, wherever it is appropriate to do so..and if it is a public thing or a wedding where it isn't religious, I will dance with her there. Not dirty dancing necessarily..but regular dancing.

I will repeat, some people here are very hardcore and anything less hardcore to many here is considered self hating..so I wasn't saying that as my opinion, but indicating that some of you might feel that way.

Was there mix dancing while Matityahu was performing?
More like people were listening and rocking while he was performing. I'm sure some might have been dancing, but not sure... Just mostly observing and bopping.

I believe the mitzvah is not to engage in activity that may lead to sin. Mixed dancing conducted in a civilised fashion doesn't necessarily lead to sin.
Men aren't even supposed to see women dancing because it is immodest to see them in dancing positions, even if they are dressed modestly.
The Rabbi in Fiddler On The Roof said it wasn't 'exactly' forbidden.

Fiddler On The Roof was also written by a Secular Zionist. It's also The Bible of Reform Jews.
Yaacov, I hear where you are coming from. I completely understand what you are saying.. However, what might be right for you isnt' necessarily right for everyone...Not now at least.

It's basically a charity organization which gives money to the Israeli soldiers. I think the website is FIDF.com

I agree with you, good doctor. But you've gotta realize that many people on here consider any Jewish organizations that is not JTF to be self-hating and erev rav.

It cheers my heart to know that everyone here enjoyed themselves so much! :)
For a brief moment, I was afraid that the forum members might start arguing about the Torah and Talmudic legalities and connotations that might surround such an event as this IDF party! >:( :(
But, I should have known that wouldn't happen. :P
