Title: Do knives count?
Post by: jdl4ever on December 24, 2007, 12:33:55 AM
I carry around a 3.5 inch switchblade and own several different kinds.  In NYC you can't carry one if it has a 4 inch blade or larger or the spring powered ones.  I just got a spring assist one that is borderline legal that I like since you can open it with one had.

Knifes are very handy, I do like butterfly knives for carrying on a daily basis.

I could use some advice on how to use the knifes.  To me, they seem to come in the way when fighting someone since my hands are not free to do the blocking, punching and fast karate hand motions since I'm afraid of cutting myself.

Just go and learn fencing basics. The principles apply to all blades. Specialise later.

Stay away from complicated oriental martial arts. Study a military system like that of Rex Applegate or Capt W. E. Fairbairn.

Hold the knife backwards so that the tip points toward your elbow.

This way, you can punch, stab and slash without worrying about cutting yourself.

although you do risk sliting ur wrist in a fight...i learned knife defense, and the hardest to block is into the ribs...well, between them

Obviously, the blade shouldn't face the forearm.  That would be stupid.

As long as the blade points away from the forearm, you cannot hurt yourself.

I used to take a knife with me when walked alone at night and was arrested here. Other time an anti-Semite (literally anti-Semite, because he mistook me for an Iraqui Semite, not a Jew -here some people think that Jews and Arabs are the same, and since the Gulf Wat on TV, they believe all semites are iraquis, haha) wanted to hurt me with a knife, I called the police, and they didn't arrest him!!!!!! Funny!!!!!!!

I think, they are pretty good for not too lethal action. If you don't want to stab the person, you can use the closed action to hit a person with it?

Any opinions on Gerber knives?

The butterfly knife I have is double bladed and sits around 9 inchs. I only recommend weapons for women.

And these fit the bill perfectly. They can be carried on the person with ease in a top of a boot, or even down the side of your top of your jeans or in the handbag. There's no risk in the woman getting damaged by the weapon.

Its solely for defence.

You are not looking to slice and dice.

Its more than enough to damage an attacker to allow the opportunity for the woman to flee.

And being a shorter blade the women doesn't risk hitting major organs, which will not result in a murder conviction.  ;)

The bonus is the strike area of the attacker then is full body. And not being restricted to other areas.

If your going to carry a knife never use a folding blade or switchblade. Use a full tang blade that is embedded into the handle and at least five inches on the exposed blade.

I'd argue that in NYC, a lockblade is one of the better "throw away" weapons to carry.  Wal-Mart in Westbury carries a nice one that is hard enough for one good fight, but cheap enough to be discarded(Do you really want to be found with a bloody knife in hand?).  To get to said Wal-Mart, take the Long Island Rail Road to Carle Place, then walk down Carle Road until you get to Old Country Road(a few blocks).  Buy a few of them(They are less than $5 apiece).  Also, I'm about to start stocking nonferrous knives for concealed use(will go through a metal detector), if anyone is interested.

ADD:  I won't discuss this any more in public, considering that I've been made aware that Informers exist on this forum.

You can be trained in how to use an edge weapon.  Anyone who is reasonably proficient in Kung Fu has at least had some training with weapons

The original poster in this thread spoke about a knife that was borderline legal... People should be prepared to defend themselves however they also need to remember that if they are found with a knife that does not pass muster they may face legal problems that could be quite expensive... JTF wants its members to know how to protect themselves but it does not encourage people to break the law.

I do not encourage anyone to break the law, for obvious reasons.  I apologize if my post came across as an endorsement of breaking local weapons laws.

Training of any martial art is good since a knife is a tool that is an extension of your arm/hand.

I have to agree with you.  A person who is armed but doesn't know how to fight has provided the attacker with the means to do some serious harm to said person.  In other words, no point in being armed if you don't know how to fight(This is in no way a statement directed towards you in particular, but out in general).
