UN police quit Kosovo town after 100 hurt in clashes

Fire burns around tanks as Kosovo Serbs clash with KFOR soldiers in the ethnically divided town of Kosovska Mitrovica. UN police were forced to withdraw Monday from the Serb-populated part of this flashpoint Kosovo town after coming under attack as they stormed a court occupied by Serbs opposed to independence.

More than 100 people, including 63 international security force members, were hurt amid gunfire and a suspected grenade blast after they moved in to regain control of the UN-run tribunal in the northern town of Kosovska Mitrovica, police officials said.
UN chief Ban Ki-moon deplored the violent attacks against UN and NATO-led forces and urged "all communities to exercise calm and restraint."
He expected "all sides to refrain from any actions or statements that could incite or provoke further violence," a statement from his office said.
At least 27 of the wounded UN police were Polish, Poland's national police spokesman Mariusz Sokolowski said in Warsaw, adding they had been pelted with rocks, homemade explosives and possibly shot at.

"The police are pulling out of northern Mitrovica," said an official from the Kosovo police mission of the United Nations, who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity.

But Kosovo's NATO-led KFOR peacekeepers have remained in the tense town.
The French army chief of staff said in Paris that 20 French soldiers serving with KFOR were among the wounded, eight of them seriously, but none of them were in critical condition.

"NATO condemns, in the strongest terms, violence that we have seen today. NATO will respond firmly to ensure a safe and secure environment," NATO spokesman James Appathurai said in Brussels.

The use of weapons makes the violence the worst to have flared in Kosovo since its ethnic Albanian-dominated parliament unilaterally declared independence from Serbia on February 17.
The clashes erupted after UN police and KFOR troops surrounded the Mitrovica courthouse in a pre-dawn raid to evict the Serb protestors.
Fifty-three Serbs were arrested, while at least 80 of them suffered wounds, including from gunshots, according to Kosovo police and hospital officials.

As the UN police arrived, about 100 angry Serbs pelted them with stones. Police used tear gas to disperse them and several UN vehicles were set alight.

The Serbs seized at least one police vehicle and freed some detainees.
But 32 detainees were taken to Pristina for questioning and were released late Monday, police said.
Branka Semenov, one the detained, told reporters upon return to Mitrovica that "those who arrested us were very tough and did not treat us as humans."

"We were handcuffed for hours. In Pristina, they handed us over to the Albanians, and there was no international representative with us," she said.
Some 300 Serbs who had taken over the courthouse on Friday refused to leave after negotiations with UN officials failed at the weekend.
The group of Serbs -- many of whom worked in the judiciary before Kosovo came under UN administration in 1999 -- had demanded the establishment of their own court.
Northern Kosovo has a 40,000-strong Serb population who are divided from the mainly ethnic Albanian south by the Ibar River, which passes through Mitrovica.
The clashes came on the four-year anniversary of the March 2004 anti-Serb riots by ethnic Albanians in which 19 people were killed and dozens of medieval Serbian Orthodox churches and monasteries were destroyed or damaged.

Kosovo's independence has been recognised by many Western countries but Serbia and Kosovo Serbs -- backed by Russia -- have vehemently rejected the move as illegal.
Serbian President Boris Tadic warned UN and NATO forces against any "excessive reaction" that could spark a further "escalation."
Outgoing Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica condemned the "use of force" and said Serbia had "begun consultations with Russia over necessary mutual reaction in order to halt all violence against the Serbs."
Russia earlier called for a resumption of talks on the status of Kosovo, saying the unrest was a result of the territory's unilateral independence declaration.

What is very interesting in all of these "breaking news" coming from the West is that no one at least noticed that the court in Kosovska Mitrovica which was this morning emptied by NATO forces was occupied during the last 3 days by Serbian Judges and court clerk who were hunted out of their jobs when NATO peackeepers arrived in June 1999.
Three days ago, they claimed to be reintegrated into their jobs after 9 years of discrimination or beeing thrown out of the Serbian province, and decided to occupy without violence or breaking anything inside it, until the bosses of the occupation forces of Kosovo and Metohija under the UNMIK flag arrive and come for negociation.
This early morning, on the sad anniversary day of the last "Kristalnacht" suffered by Serbs 4 years ago when at least 20 sacred buildings such as churches, monasteries, cemetries were damaged or destroyed (sometimes with "Caterpillar" machines), someone at the top of occupation forces decided to arrest Serbian judges and court clerks and send them at their headquarters in Prishtina, where they were handed to shiptars for "verification" before beeing released.
That's what happens. I hope this time Serbs in Serbia know who they have on the top of their power: treators!

Oke comrade,
You write very good.
I agree.

another genocide against serbs >:( >:(

Serbian Govt should work actively to safeguard the interests of its citizens in Kosovo.

another genocide against serbs >:( >:(
Yes it's terrible! >:(

Let's just invade it, take out the U.N forces and get control of our land back already. Do to them what they did to us.
K and thanks.

Serbian Govt should work actively to safeguard the interests of its citizens in Kosovo.
The problem is, that the Serbian administration, as a whole, doesn't care about the Serbs and minorities in Kosovo and Metohija. They're just doing some representation in order not to lose their heads in front of the Serbs in Serbia. The reason is that all of those who are in the government and opposition in parliament in Serbia have parents or grand-parents who all were previleged under the communist regime, when, at the same time, political opponents, tchetniks (for avoiding possible misunderstanding: the Tchetniks of general Draza Mihailovic were the one and only resistance force against nazis), landlords, Orthodox popes, monks were killed, sent to decades long jail, forced to emigration, many times also killed in emigration, etc...
As an example, during all those boring "negociation" process between Serbian state and albanians from Kosovo and Metohija in front of the UN, I have never heard or read anyone in the Serbian delegation claiming before the UN, Brussel or whatever, that before communist occupation and nationalisation, ONE THIRD of the Kosovo and Metohija territory was the property of the Serbian Orthodox Church. So if Western governements, the Serbian governement, the UN are willing to protect private property, why don't anyone give back those territories back to its legitimate owner before the dictature arised?
-
We should not expect anything from our current government!
The administration of Boris Tadic is the marionette of foreign powers like the EU/ Vatican and the US.
Every Serbian government which is willing to fully cooperate with the EU most be considered as a national traitor.
Because the EU is surrounding Serbia and the separation of Kosovo is just a part of the anti Serbian plan which is today in it's fully operation.
With the support of the EU/ US the Albanians from Kosovo who are a national majority declared the Serbian province of Kosovo as a state. The EU and US guaranteed to Serbia back in 1999 that the territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia will be guaranteed.
Today the same EU/ US is violating this international agreed principle by separating Kosovo a Serbian province from Serbia.
How can the UN support the Albanians from Kosovo and their intentions to create some kind of a Republic on Serbian soil and in the same time not taking actions againt the Republic of Croatia which eliminated the Republic of Serbian Krajina and bannished the whole Serbian populiation (which had the status of a constitutional nation in Croatia) from Krajina and Croatia.
The UN is the ally of the Serbian enemies.
-
What do you think about this one:
Serbian president Boris Tadic established normal relationships with Croatia a country which committed genocide and ethnic cleansing over the Serbs. B. Tadic also apologized to the Croats for some kind of Serbian terror against Croatia?
Today the president of Croatia Stipe Mesic (former minister of the government of Franjo Tudjman which directly conducted ethnic cleansing against the Serbs) is claming that Kosovo should be an independent state because it was an constitutional element of former Yugoslavia?
Constitutional element ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
And Tadic applies for good relationships with the country whose president says something like that ? ?

What do you expect better from someone whose parents and/or grandparents belonged to privileged under the comunist regime?

That's true mu brother,
But I do not think that that should be an excuse for the president of the Republic of Serbia to behave like a ustashi..
In contradiction to Boris Tadic, Tadic's father had other political ideas when he was a member of Serbia's parliament.

It is not an excuse, it is the explanation.

I won't bet on that. Ljuba (his father) describes himself as a marxist, and the first postulate of those is internationalism, with no borders, no democracy, no freedom, no people, no nationality.
Does that remind something to our Jewish friends?

I do not know that much about his father O0
I only know that he said in 1995 that Serbia must never forgot the Republic of Serbian Krajina just like Germany did not forgot eastern Germany (1990)..

What people say is not that important compared to what they decide to do and/or write. Milosevic also stated as his program in the presidential run of 1992 that he would work for "every Serb to live in the same country". But when voters understood this as beeing a claim for a sovereign and independant Serbia, he worked for another jugoslavia as if a mythic jugoslavian people existed. That way, it wasen't difficult for him to establish ban and economic sanction toward Serbs west of the Drina river when he was asked that by the Clinton administration.
I forgot to give a key exemple about the comunist privileged origins of those "democrats" in power in Belgrade. A member of the Simon Wiesenthal association from Jerusalem (I don't remember his name) had to beg the power in Belgrade to issue an international warrant for arresting 2 ex-nazi collaborators found living one in Hungary the other in South America, if I remember good. Those two were accused and highly suspected of contributing to mass murder on Jewish AND Serbian people in occupied jugoslavia, in Vojvodina if I remember.
That means that if Jewish people diden't worry about justice for the extermination of their ancestors by nazi-collaborators in occupied jugoslavia, those criminals against humanity, who also contributed to mass execution of Serbs during the same period, could walk free also in Serbia without beeing bothered by the Serbian administration.

God save our nation :)

As a Croat i would love to see Serbia kill all the Muslims in kosovo and in Serbia ;D O0

Whenever AQ connections and relations with Kosovo Albanaziz cross a certain predetermined limit...
OR
Whenever there is some certain or circumstantially correct information available from any of the reliable sources like MI5, Mossad, KGB or Illuminati etc about Osama hiding in Kosovo...
Then the Serbian Government shall have all the moral rights and duties on the earth to evacuate them from Kosovo.
However if the CIA brings the information about Osama hiding in Pak666, then it may be prerogative of America to act. ;)
With Regards... :)

May I ask you what you do think about Croatian genocide on Serbs?
According to you:
A/ it did happen many times last couple of centuries
B/ it happened during the nazi-puppet Croatian nazi state ruled by Ante Pavelic, but figures of the victims are exagerated
C/ it never happened, those who died were only victims of wars waged by Serbs against Croats fighting for freedom.

It was the year 1999 that Nostradamus said it to be of awakening and changing of the the history forever.
Accordingly the unfortunate invasion on Belgrade was to slowly unveil the powers of G_d against the perpetual Evil. We are to note that since then there has been no respite on earth especially for the Evil.
Here it must be noted that the perpetual Muslamic Evil existed since last 1400 years and much before even the search and birth of America. So America is not the guiding factor behind the Muslamics. It may be rather other way round that at certain devilish occasions the Muslamics spirit gets powerful enough to take up the decisive controls.
With Regards... :)

Good questions.
They say that they needed genocide to create a Croatian state only for the Croatians.
This clown "americanhero" quoted a couple of times the statements of Ante Pavelic and Ante starcevic that Croatia is only for the Croats.
If they did not conduct genocde against the Serbs, today the Serbian population in the borders of today's Croatia would be 45% or more!
He says that he supports Serbia regarding Kosovo but he thinks that Croatia including Krajina are only of the Croatians.

That's what I suspected.
Just to complete your assumption, let's look at simple facts: Kingom of Serbia, before WW1 had roughly the same number of inhabitants as England had, which was established at around 6 million people. For information, Serbia and England are roughly the same surface. Today, 67 years later, England has 50 million inhabitants, while Serbia's barely 8 million inhabitants. Who would dare saying there was no genocide against Serbs. >:(
-
Wow Ante Pavelic and Ante starcevic i said my family hates them because they family members killed when i said Croatia is for Croats i did not know they thought that way
DALMACIJA answer this is Serbia only for Serbs ?
-
]Croatia is for Croats [/b]
SaintSava, he just confirmed what I had said :::D
-
Then i retracted what i had said because i looked more in to the topic .Answer this if you say Muslims don't belong in Serbia but do Croats belong there?
-
Muslims and other non Serbs are accpeted as normal citizens in Serbia as long as they respect the authority of the Serbian state.
I never said that I have something against people who have a different background, ethnicity or a religion.
-
i did not say you did i was asking you a question that is all
-
Let me ask you this if you have a daughter would you rather have her marry a Croat or Albanian
-
A Serb:P
-
Let me ask you this if you have a daughter would you rather have her marry a Croat or Albanian
I'm not involved in this discussion, but I'd rather have her marry a Croat than a person whose national flag resembles a burnt pigeon.
I have nothing against Croats in general, and I don't think other Serbs should either. Sure, there are a good chunk of Croats that are still loyal to the Ustasa and/or who hate Serbs for various things, but I think the majority (or at least an equal chunk) of Croats are good people...I have known many myself.
-
As a Croat i would rather my daughter marry a Serb because if she even kisses a Muslim there will be hell to pay
-
agreed:D good old christianity > muslim pagan cult.
-
Kosovo is Serbia!

Kosovo for Serbia, out with the Nazi muSSlims now!
