I have heard claims that Jalapenos and habanero peppers reduce cancer, anyone know if this is true? I eat them all the time and love hot/spicy food.
-
I'm not sure it can be proven yet... but they're delicious!
-
The claim is that it contains Capsaicin which supposedly in large amounts can be used to prevent cancer.
-
That's great! My dad grows Habanero peppers and he puts the peppers into his chili to spice it up! O0
-
They certainly don't seem to alleviate "Type II Diabetes" in Mexicans with huge fat rear ends! ;D
Seriously, though...there are a great many natural foods with "anti-oxidant" properties which are good for you, but there are equally as many, if not more, other sources of cancer risk...such as breathing city air, drinking chlorinated water, etc...
As most cancer specialists will tell you...in the final analysis it's your particular genetic makeup which might prevent you from developing cancer; or result in your having cancer regardless of what foods or other preventative measures you take.
Today, cancer is the #1 childhood killer!
Very few young children have lived long enough to have smoked cigarettes for 20 years, or to have breathed polluted air for 60 years, so....?

ROTFLMAO! :::D
Anyway, I have heard that hot chilis and capsaicin are good for you as well, and do believe it. The problem (for me) is that in recent years, I have found that eating hot stuff gives me severe intestinal irritation (yeah, I know, TMI) and this has forced me to cut back severely. (I have no problem eating chili products of any heat--I can tolerate it very well--it's the other end that makes me pay. :o)
BTW, capsaicin does not actually attack or inflame any tissue whatsoever. This is medical fact. It tricks your nerves into thinking the tissue is irritated.

Yep same problem here, but the consequences are well worth it ;)

I have heard this for years. I do know that cayenne pepper has a large amount of vitamin A, C, B6, K, and manganese and that peppers are very good for you.
-

It is Japanese horseradish.
I like horseradish but i hate wasabi
-
I love peppers!
I put cayenne peper on broiled salmon for Shabbat.
Same here, though some people can't have peppers, that's too bad, thank G-d there's peppers. O0
-
Horseradish/wasabe is concentrated mustard oil, I believe. It is completely unrelated to capsaicin and is in a totally different family of plants (Brassicaceae vs. Solanaceae). Horseradish is a mustard plant. Peppers are a nightshade.
One notices that although wasabe causes a huge nasal rush, it doesn't persist the way hot chili does.
-
People that eat them all die young, so it just appears that they prevent cancer! ;D

For some bizarre reason I don't feel the irritating effect of Wasabi unless it reached a certain part in my mouth that is closest to the inner nose.

I found that out when I ate a pile of cheese stuffed jalapenos, they were wonderful going in, not so great going out. ;D
Those things are horrifically unhealthy for you--the breading is loaded in trans fats! :o

That's right. I was thinking in Hebrew...that's how we literally call fresh water in Hewbrew.

Humans are made to eat meat
Well I try not to 'proselytize' people into veganism :-X
It works for me but I am aware that it's almost impossible for many people.

Your a Vegan?
-
Yea I am.
-
Yea I am.
May I ask why?
-
Yea I am.
As long as you're doing it the right way (don't forget the Red Star Yeast, or equivalent) then you'll probably be one of the healthiest people on JTF. O0
-
Yea I am.
May I ask why?
I have been actually asked the same question already by Lisa...
I started as vegetarian because I felt guilty of eating flesh. Then I also felt sorry for the milking cows and for the chickens being exploited for their eggs so I became fully vegan. And I also developed a health consciousness so I try to eat healthy and I think one avoids allot of the unhealthy foods if he becomes vegan. There are still health hazards to avoid though- like margarine and other types of plastic foods and trans fats.

I actually didn't hear about red start yeast. Is it equivalent to tofu ?

You can proselytize for anything that you want--the worst that can happen is that people can say "no". I am very open to hearing your arguments for veganism, even though I could never be one! :) ;)

It's a type of yeast (like the kind used in making bread) called Red Star Nutritional Yeast. Most vegans use it (it's kosher too) because it helps them to get B vitamins and proteins without consuming animals. Yeast is fungi like mushrooms so it's ok for vegans to eat it. It will help you to get some of the nutrients that most people get mostly from meat.

Wow!! a real vegan. I'm impressed.

Thanks Rubystars, I will check it out.

You're welcome. I know B12 can be a challenge to get enough of on a vegan diet. That helps most vegans get what they need.

Yes I know, I have been taking B12 tablets for years now.

Red star? Sounds commie to me...
-
I don't know if it's commie or not, I didn't really think about it that way. I just know that vegans use a couple of tablespoons of that yeast mixed into their food to make sure they get enough nutrition without having to eat meat or other animal products.
