I don't know much about hockey, but as far as I do know, fist fights is a part of the game. It sounds pretty thugish.

For the most part, only "enforcers" (whose job is specifically to fight, and thereby defend other teammates) actually engage in fisticuffs during hockey games. It is not a constant occurrence (most hockey games have one fight per game or fewer), and hockey tends to have far fewer catastrophic injuries in it than other contact sports, such as football.
