California's unemployment rate jumped to 9.3 percent in December last year, up from 8.4 percent in November, it was announced on Friday.
The December unemployment rate was the highest in 15 years, highlighting the severity of the economic slowdown, the California Employment Development Department (EDD) said.
In the Los Angeles County, the jobless rate was 9.5 percent.
The department said the rising unemployment rates were due to lackluster holiday sales, continued home value declines and a heightened tempo of layoffs at companies across all sectors of the economy.
California, the most populous state in the nation, is heading into a second year of recession. The last time the state jobless number hit 9.3 percent was January 1994.
Nationwide, the unemployment rate was 7.2 percent in December, compared with 6.7 percent in the previous month, said the department.

Briann, I live in CA. My home's value has dropped by 200,000.00 in the past 2 years. Houses that sold for 975 thousand dollars are now going for 775 thousand or less.
It is expected to get worse.

Yes, I agree. The bubble is about 1/2 through bursting. Its an awful thought, but its sorta unstoppable. I am still in the positive... but I know that probably wont last for much longer.

The Liberals here in California made so many allowences for Millions of Illegal aliens.
Many hospitals have gone bankrupt because they have to treat all the illegals who can't pay.

They will ruin both Oregon and Washington. They've chased many of the older Seattle and Portland residents to states like Montana and Alaska and have built huge socialist infrastructure. The only reason they have been able to pay for these programs is the unprecedented growth in both Oregon and Washington. They benefited from the tech boom and from all the white people coming here to flee other parts of the USA. Once the liberals settle in they complain that a place is not diverse enough. They invite all the third world to make them selves feel better and then things get out of control because the third worlders suck up all the freebies and give nothing back. Crime also skyrockets. They rarely stay to see how their plans went and will ruin other places like Utah and Wyoming. You won't see many liberals actually living in a neighborhood with blacks or Cambodians.
Washington state has a $6.7 billion deficit. The Democratci governor blames it on Bush even though she raised all state worker salaries by $25,000 per year. They almost have as many public programs as Vancouver, British Columbia and that's saying something!!
