Bill creates detention camps in U.S. for 'emergencies'
Sweeping, undefined purpose raises worries about military police state

Rep. Alcee L. Hastings, D-Fla., has introduced to the House of Representatives a new bill, H.R. 645, calling for the secretary of homeland security to establish no fewer than six national emergency centers for corralling civilians on military installations.
The proposed bill, which has received little mainstream media attention, appears designed to create the type of detention center that those concerned about use of the military in domestic affairs fear could be used as concentration camps for political dissidents, such as occurred in Nazi Germany.
Heed the warning of a former Hitler Youth who sees America on the same path as pre-Nazi Germany in "Defeating the Totalitarian Lie" from WND Books!
The bill also appears to expand the president's emergency power, much as the executive order signed by President Bush on May 9, 2007, that, as WND reported, gave the president the authority to declare an emergency and take over the direction of all federal, state, local, territorial and tribal governments without even consulting Congress.
As WND also reported, DHS has awarded a $385 million contract to Houston-based KBR, Halliburton's former engineering and construction subsidiary, to build temporary detention centers on an "as-needed" basis in national emergency situations.
According to the text of the proposed bill, the purpose of the National Emergency Centers is "to provide temporary housing, medical, and humanitarian assistance to individuals and families dislocated due to an emergency or major disaster."
Three additional purposes are specified in the text of the proposed legislation:
* To provide centralized locations for the purposes of training and ensuring the coordination of federal, state and local first responders;
* To provide centralized locations to improve the coordination of preparedness, response and recovery efforts of government, private, not-for-profit entities and faith-based organizations;
* To meet other appropriate needs, as defined by the secretary of homeland security.
The broad specifications of the bill's language, however, contribute to concern that the "national emergency" purpose could be utilized by the secretary of homeland security to include any kind of situation the government wants to contain or otherwise control.
Rep. Hastings created controversy during the 2008 presidential campaign with his provocative comments concerning Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
"If Sarah Palin isn't enough of a reason for you to get over whatever your problem is with Barack Obama, then you damn well had better pay attention," Hastings said, as reported by ABC News. "Anybody toting guns and stripping moose don't care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks. So, you just think this through."
H.R. 645, which seeks to allocate $360 million for developing the emergency centers, has been referred to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and to the Committee on Armed Services.

It may be a reminder to Gulag Archipelago.

This would be something good to write about over at www.congress.org (http://www.congress.org)

What was the point of closing Gitmo if this is going to happen? >:(

This is the seeds of what we have all predicted. That Obama will use the depression, and its after-effects to centralize power and snub out his opposition.
You watch.... there WILL be rioting.. and attempts on his life... and he will use this for the pretense of outlawing dissenting opinion... and he will pass the fairness doctrine.. and start jailing people who he feels are a threat to his ideology.

This is actually for 'domestic' detaining. According to the blacks.... 'domestic' terrorism is a greater threat to Obama than international. This negro congressman is a complete wacko... who beleived that Palin would incarcerate all the blacks if she got elected...

Yeah, notice item 4, that's the dangerous one.
SEC. 2. ESTABLISHMENT OF NATIONAL EMERGENCY CENTERS.
(a) In General- In accordance with the requirements of this Act, the Secretary of Homeland Security shall establish not fewer than 6 national emergency centers on military installations.
(b) Purpose of National Emergency Centers- The purpose of a national emergency center shall be to use existing infrastructure--
(1) to provide temporary housing, medical, and humanitarian assistance to individuals and families dislocated due to an emergency or major disaster;
(2) to provide centralized locations for the purposes of training and ensuring the coordination of Federal, State, and local first responders;
(3) to provide centralized locations to improve the coordination of preparedness, response, and recovery efforts of government, private, and not-for-profit entities and faith-based organizations; and
(4) to meet other appropriate needs, as determined by the Secretary of Homeland Security.
1-3 all sound very noble and practical, but number 4 is very dangerous, it is completely open ended, a blank check, means the so called "National Emergency Centers" could be used for ANYTHING.

Pres. Bush declared a Federal Emergency for B. hussein's inauguration, for example.

isn't the definition of a concentration camp one in which innocent people are rounded up and killed systematically...man woman or child?
-
I hope that EVERYONE will tell their Congress reps what they think about this bill....
-
isn't the definition of a concentration camp one in which innocent people are rounded up and killed systematically...man woman or child?
Actually no it isnt. It means a camp where non-combatant enemies of the state are rounded up and imprisoned. They are actually very common in every country throughout history as a non-violent 'humane' way of dealing with potential threats or adversaries.
The Nazis 'concentration camps' were initially for political enemies of the state... specifically bolshevics and other non-nazi party members. This ALWAYS happens after a political coup. And may VERY WILL happen if Obama gets his way.
The term is therefore very appropriate and I AM NOT trying to trivialize the Nazi death camps of WWII.

no, that would be a death camp. The term concentration camp was actually first used by the British in the Boer war, where they, for lack of a better term, concentrated Boer women and children in order to get their husbands/fathers/sons to stop their guerrilla war.

Hi Briann, I will assume that those camps they are building might be used for 2 things...detaining Christians and Jews or Detaining Moslems and Radical liberals. This depends on which way the Country turns around. If we get our Country back, those camps may be needed for controlling Moslems and Liberals. If we do not get our Country back, those camps may be utilized for exterminating Christians and Jews. While we are conservative and would never harm anyone, the Moslems and Liberals would not hesitate to kill us the way the Nazi's did.

Those who do not learn from Histroy are doomed to repeat it.
The road that we are headed down gets worse and worse.

The government has a few places like this already built that are fully supplied and manned allegedly needed for civil emergency. Its the military but not the military. The article lost me when they started pairing up Jews and Blacks that is something I simply can't stand to see. As far as Palin goes I would not loose a nights sleep with her in the Oval Office. The Monkey president is another story.

Do you think it is ever appropriate to create concentration camps according to this definition in any state?
