Title: What I want for my birthday
Post by: zachor_ve_kavod on May 03, 2009, 02:16:35 PM
Today is my birthday.  I am 36 years old today.  This is the time of year when I typically take stock of my life, as many people do on their birthday.  I think about what I have accomplished and what I have failed to accomplish.  And in years past, I've typically made resolutions about various things I would like to improve over the next year.

There are usually mundane though worthy things that have been on my list (getting in better physicall shape, reading certain books, being a better father and husband).

This year, there is only one thing I want.  I want to be a better Jew.  That's it.  I have not been a particularly observant Jew up until now, having been raised and immersed in a completely secular environment.  But Rabbi Kahane (of blessed memory) has had a tremendous impact on my life, and I am convinced logically that of all the things I could be, being a good Jew is the best thing to be.

If you have a birthday wish for me, wish me success in my task of becoming a better Jew.  That's the only thing I want.

Happy birthday Zachor ve Kavod.  I wish you success in becoming more observant.  Find a Synagogue you like and go every week.  Start out slowly.

Blessed are all those who toil in learning Torah since Torah study is one of the pillars which holds this world up.

Quote
Pirkie Avot 6:1

1. The sages expounded in the language of the Mishnah (blessed is He who chose them and their learning):

Rabbi Meir would say: Whoever studies Torah for Torah's sake alone, merits many things; not only that, but [the creation of] the entire world is worthwhile for him alone. He is called friend, beloved, lover of G-d, lover of humanity, rejoicer of G-d, rejoicer of humanity. The Torah enclothes him with humility and awe; makes him fit to be righteous, pious, correct and faithful; distances him from sin and brings him close to merit. From him, people enjoy counsel and wisdom, understanding and power, as is stated (Proverbs 8:14): "Mine are counsel and wisdom, I am understanding, mine is power." The Torah grants him sovereignty, dominion, and jurisprudence. The Torah's secrets are revealed to him, and he becomes as an ever-increasing wellspring and as an unceasing river. He becomes modest, patient and forgiving of insults. The Torah uplifts him and makes him greater than all creations.
